Cooreman, Désiré

° Wieze, 16/02/1827 — † Wieze, 6/03/1916

Jan Dewilde (translation: Jo Sneppe)

Not only did Désiré Cooreman follow a training for the priesthood at the Major Seminary in Ghent, in 1846 he also founded and conducted 'La Société Chorale' (The Choral Society) of the Preparatory Seminary in Sint-Niklaas. In 1931 this choir developed into the boys' choir In Dulci Jubilo. For the prize-giving ceremonies in the Preparatory Seminary Cooreman composed no less than 43 cantatas. Sometimes these works dealt with historical issues, e.g. Les flamands avant la bataille de Courtrai (The Flemings before the Battle of Kortrijk, 1852), but mostly they were based on religious themes, such as Moïse ou l'infidélité d'Israël (Moses or the Infidelity of Israel, 1856) or Samson (1877). In addition to these cantatas he also composed choral music, works for piano, songs and church music.
