Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot, son of violin virtuoso Charles-Auguste de Bériot and singer Maria Malibran, was born in Paris in 1833. Like his parents he chose a musical career, and already at the age of ten he performed in Leuven. One of de Bériot’s first piano teachers was Sigismond Thalberg. De Bériot was from 1866 on affiliated with the École Niedermeyer as a piano teacher and from 1887 with the Paris Conservatoire, where he taught Ricardo Vines and Maurice Ravel. The latter dedicated his work Rhapsodie Espagnole to de Bériot. In collaboration with his father de Bériot wrote three pedagogical works: Clef du piano, Méthode d’accompagnement pour piano et violon, and L’art de l’accompagnement appliqué au piano. Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot composed four piano concertos and furthermore chamber music, orchestral works, and romances.
